Our History

Calvary Baptist Church started in 1967, with a small group of Christians meeting a home in the Strathmore section of Matawan, NJ. The group was led by Jesse Dilday, Missions Committee Chairman of Monmouth Baptist Church, Eatontown, NJ. With financial assistance from the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, the church called our first Mission Pastor, Jack Kinney. Soon after the church began meeting at Strathmore Elementary School and named itself: Calvary Baptist Mission. Within a year property was purchased at our current location on the corner of Lloyd Road and Church Street. The church met in the two-car garage for worship and utilized the three-bedroom brick house for Bible studies.

In the fall of 1968, Jon F. Meek, Jr became the first full-time pastor. Over the years eight pastors and six associate pastors have served Calvary Baptist Church.

The garage was running out of space so the church built its current facility in 1977. The members of Calvary Baptist Church and a team from First Baptist Church, Columbus, Mississippi joined together to build our entire current facility in just two weeks.

From the beginning Calvary Baptist Church continues to spread the gospel in different ways. The church helped plant Colts Neck Community Church and a church in Howell, NJ. Additionally the church has sponsored four ethinic churches worshiping in Arabic, Korean, Filipino, and

Spanish and provided a temporary home for the Chinese Christian Fellowship. The church participated and partnered with the Bowery Mission and Graffiti's Free-Lunch-in-the-Park in NYC, Solutions Pregnancy and Health Center, and the Matawan Food Pantry ministry to show the love of Christ to others. The church has also shared the gospel through soccer camps, Vacation Bible School, Fall Festivals, to name a few.

Calvary has benefited benefitted greatly from a strong emphasis on studying and applying God’s Word. Sunday morning Bible studies have been available for children through adults during the rich history of the church. Other studies and fellowship groups meet throughout the week.

From it’s beginning, throughout the past 50 years and into the future, Calvary Baptist Church continues to help others become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
